The former dancer and shoe designer is know for her extra bright colours and statement heels.
Aminah Abdul Jillil isn’t your typical shoe designer. In fact she didn’t think she would be in the footwear industry at all: She started her career as a backup dancer for the likes of Britney Spears and Janet Jackson and just took sewing and fashion illustration classes as a hobby.
But by 2012 she took the leap and decided to pursue fashion full time, launching her eponymous shoe label. And although her dancing days might be behind her, she channels a similar dynamism and vibrant energy in her shoe designs which come in shocking pink, feature extra large bows and novelty heels.
Her latest hit is a pair of strappy sandals featuring heels spelling out the word “Love.”
“I pushed myself out of my own envelope with these heels,” said the designer.
Her gamut runs far and wide, from flat sandals with laces running all the way to the knees, to crystal pumps for the evening and bow-embellished boots.
Jillil has chosen to run her label as a direct-to-consumer business meaning that the brand’s website and Instagram feed are the best sources to shop, keep up to date with new launches or simply take in all the sparkle, feel-good colors and designs.
Added bonus? By following and shopping, you would simultaneously be supporting an independent and Black-owned business, which remains of extreme importance as race conversations around the world continue.
