It’s 2021, and we’d bet our favourite pair of New Balance that most of the people you know now own a pair of white trainers. Even the most dedicated stiletto disciples have made the switch – at least on Saturday afternoons. A combination of lockdown wardrobe habits and luxe design from heavyweight fashion houses has convinced us of the merit of the humble white sneaker. They’re the footwear equivalent of a crew neck Tee, and as essential to our everyday lives as caffeine and Netflix. White is the perfect colour for spring, and, if you’re new to sneakers, about as inoffensive as it comes. Step on it this season with box-fresh trainers by Celine, Prada and Bottega Veneta.

Fresh off the runway, Celine’s retro-inspired high tops have taken the fashion circuit by storm. A new take on a classic sneaker silhouette, team with relaxed tailoring and a smudge of lippy for the ultimate in high-low dressing. Look to Miu Miu, Prada and Acne for equally hype-worthy high tops.

Neoprene and mesh. Two things we didn’t used to associate with luxury fashion, but now can’t get enough of. Whether training or hiking shoes, these sneakers look as good on the track as they do on the street. Adidas and Nike are the frontrunners in this department, but there are other labels making style gains. New to Matches, straight-up sportswear brand Asics and unexpected fashion favourite New Balance are champions of the sport.

Pared-back profiles and sophisticated finishes turn down the volume on the trainer’s sporting history. Super chic and stylishly low key, Acne, The Row and Axel Arigato do our favourite all-white, all-new trainers. If it’s good enough for the Olsen twins, it’s good enough for us.

One for the trend-setters and hype-baes, fast forward to the future and you end up with something that looks like Balenciaga’s Track Hike Sneakers. A step too far for you? Look to Asics, Nike and cult label Vetements’ Reebok collab for an easier-to-wear shoe with enough rubber to make you feel totally cutting edge.
