Come rain or shine, we now consider chunky soles are wardrobe staple. Image courtesy of Imaxtree.

You’ve heard it here before and you’ll undoubtedly hear it here again. Chunky boots are ‘in’ (as they say – with a soupcon of irony – on the fashion circuit). And despite what their snow-appropriate appearance would have you believe, they’re not just an A/W thing. The oversized style has proven to be a perennial favourite since their popularity soared a few seasons ago, and we’re getting ready to style them for spring.

Pioneered by Bottega Veneta’s Lug boot and fuelled by similarly chunky styles from Ganni, Prada and Alexander McQueen, the lug-soled boot (with a thick rubber sole and deep indentations) is now a wardrobe staple. At a time when comfort is commanding the attention of fashion-lovers everywhere, a chunky boot worn with billowing prairie dresses, micro skirts and slouchy shorts ticks all the boxes. They don’t hurt your feet, they look super chic, and they give your springtime ensembles an air of rebellious nonchalance. What’s not to like?

Fashion lore dictates that spring boots should be white or neutral – but black actually works year-round. It’s all about what you pair it with. When the cold snap finally ends, don’t pack your BV Bounces away. Instead, take a walk amongst the daffodils in big-soled boots from Burberry, Gucci and Proenza Schouler.
