New Year, New (Chunky) Shoes

10th January 2021

Walk into the new year in fabulous and wearable shoes that set the tone for a fresh start.

As we’ve closed the book on a year like no other, it’s time to look ahead. The upcoming shoe season promises a glut of awesome, wearable shoes – and the odd eccentric style to keep trend lovers on their toes. Largely, the mood in fashion remains low-key – we’re all craving comfort, and designers have responded with collections of easy-to-wear but chic shoes that will welcome you into the new year with minimum effort and maximum style. Importantly, these aren’t new-season updates for the sake of it – these are new-season updates with real longevity that you can love and wear for years to come. From new designers to cult classics, kick start 2021 with shoes that set the tone for a new beginning and new perspectives.

And by substantial, we of course mean, chunky. For now, the demand for effortless at-home shoes remains high. Whether it’s the cosy warmth of Aquazurra’s shearling slides (big on fluff), or the streamlined sophistication of Bottega Veneta’s vowen sandals, a pair of slip-ons are the best at-home shoes to keep you comfortable until the spring (when hopefully you can wear them to the beach). Next up: clogs. The most divisive (f)ugly shoe trend of spring 2021.

We’ve sung the praises of chunky loafers before, but there really is no other shoe that captures the spirit of a fresh start better than these – maybe it’s the back-to-school vibes? The heavy silhouette is fashion-forward while the classic style keeps both feet firmly on the ground. Strut your way into the new year in big-soled beauties by Prada, Gucci and cult favourite Martine Rose.

As much as we’re looking forward to spring, there’s still a lot of winter left to contend with. At a time when most social interactions can only take place outdoors, wearable footwear is an absolute must. Cue Gia Couture’s practically perfect ‘Perni’ boots – a shoe crush that will serve you for seasons to come. From Alexander McQueen and Ganni’s heavy duty Chelseas, to Prada and Loewe’s combat boots, be prepared for all the weather might throw at you in a pair of durable on-trend boots. Come spring, they’ll look great paired with ditsy print and prairie dresses, too.
