What’s that sound? It’s the communal sigh of relief as a million women swap sky-high heels for a pair of comfy sneakers. Not that we’d ever pack away our 5-inchers for good. Whether you live in a pair of New Balance 990s, or save them for lazy Sunday brunches – a box-fresh sneaker is a new season wardrobe staple. If you’re the former, you’ve probably bookmarked 10 new pairs to add to your collection already. If you’re new to the crepe arena, let us give you the 101. Here are our favourite sneakers of the season.

AW20 is all about styles that look as though you could run a triathlon in them. New Balance’s 990V5 is pretty much sold out everywhere, and the 327 is set to be big news. In true dad-inspired fashion, the insider favourite looks as good on your best mate’s stepdad as it does on the runway. For an alternative but equally stylish shoe, look to Reebok, Acne and the Cecillie Bahnsen X Suicoke collab. Think hiking, but make it fashion.

Fashion’s hunger for massive bits of rubber-soled footwear hasn’t changed. Colour is a defining feature of AW20’s chunky trainers. Strike out in Balenciaga’s lime-green accented Track 2s, or, if you prefer something with a bit more “subtlety”, add Bottega Veneta’s Speedster to your new season wishlist.

Believe the hype. The Adidas X Prada collaboration is almost impossible to get hold of. Luckily, we snapped up a pair of the re-engineered Superstars before anyone else did. Phew. Missed out? Members of the Beyhive will love her chunky-soled Originals, and fans of ‘70s-inspired fashion should look to Prada, Gucci and classic All Star Converse for a dose of old-school style.

You don’t have to be a hype bae to appreciate a good pair of trainers. Minimalists will need no introduction to Common Projects and Saint Laurent low tops. For those looking to expand their style horizons – quite literally – chunky doesn’t necessarily mean maximalist. We’re not talking huge – just something with a bit more heft. Take the big-soled trend for a test drive in all-white sneakers by Isabel Marant and Nike X Comme des Garçons
