The Shoe Trends of AW20

30th August 2020

From chunky, lug soled wellies to pearl-encrusted, jewellery like pumps, this season really has it all.

Welcome fall! While we haven’t missed your miserable weather, grey days and spontaneous showers – we are excited to get back into our boots, something that there will be plenty of this autumn. Wellies, hiking- and biker boots, never has the trends been so practical. Well, to balance that out we have sky high platforms making a strong comeback, high-shine-thigh-highs, and shoes so beautifully delicate they’ll count as jewellery. Jumpstart the new season with our hand picked selection – these are the shoes to add to your closet next.

Terrain-Chelsea Boots
Hiking boots and chunky bikers, this is a style that dominated the AW20 runways. The clumsy, lug soled boots have been making a strong statement over the past few seasons, which means you are guaranteed to find a one that works for your wardrobe. This seasons boots are chunkier than ever, look for thick, tractor soles – Prada and Bottega Veneta has already made the style their signature.

Jewelley shoes
As an extreme end to the chunky shoe trend – delicate diamanté pumps and chain-embellished sandals were big news for AW20. Simone Rocha’s pearls & chains flats summed up the trend, as more is more for festive pumps that will bright up the coming holiday season. JW Anderson’s diamond hoop Mary-Jane’s are set to be one of the hottest shoe of the season, dropping next month.

Shiny Thigh-high boots
The OTK-boot is a guaranteed winter favourite – however this season’s version is fierce, thigh-high and high-shine. Channel your inner dominatrix and pair with sharp tailoring and oversized coats, this boot is not just meant for nighttime. Proenza Schouler boots were and instant hit with that old Celine-like shape, the boots are up for pre-order should you long for that runway look.

Chunky Wellies
We didn’t think this shoe trend could get any chunkier, but last years lug sole trend reached another level as good old wellies hit the runways. Practical – yes, but don’t expect pretty, this shoe is something for those glamping and staycation holidays, something you’ll actually have usage of once we move on to other trends. Ganni and Bottega Veneta is likely to be our go-to brands this season.

Equestrian Boots
The riding boot is already a classic in our books, but this season the sharp, equestrian boots are one of the trendiest pairs to own. Opt for Ann Demeulemeesters boots that are part of the brands permanent collection or look to Prada or Legres for that minimal style. Chanel’s heeled fold-over boots are set to be an instant sell-out, we suggest to put yourself on that waitlist today.

Retro Platforms
This seasons retro platform is a sweet marriage of the best of 70’s and 90’s. Ziggy Stardust platforms in snake print and chunky Spice Girls loafers (bonus points for a rubber sole). Platforms have been making a strong comeback for a few seasons now, but with this more wearable approach and flatform versions hitting the stores, we expect this trend to take flight.

Slouchy boots
The slouchier, the better – this trend is a nice alternative if vinyl thigh-high sounds like too much work. This 80’s favourite allows for generous winter layering and looks best paired with skirts. Malone Soulier’s boots for Roksanda’s are our ultimate goal, but we’ll definitely settle for some of the below suggestions, too.

Modern Loafers
The chic loafer is back and this season we are wearing them with socks all the way into the winter months. Both heeled versions as well and masculine, box leather loafers were a runway hit, we’ll be styling them with skirts for a back-to-school look.

Colourful boots
A pair of candy coloured boots will be your instant pick-me-up once the days start to feel shorter, this season will bring you endless options. Opt for colour blocking with contrasting colours or match your trousers to the boots for a runway-like look. Proenza Schouler and Victoria Beckham added colour to their otk-boots, so think twice before you automatically go for a black pair this season.

The Western Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots are be loved by many but they aren’t exactly news, however the 2020 version that made a strong case for itself is sleek, sharp and with a Western influence. Bottega Veneta debuted many version of the sophisticated pull ons, so expect the shops to follow suite. Being the most wearable trend of the season, we think these updated cowboy boots to be the best buy-now-wear-forever purchase of the season.
